Crisp Bean-and-Cheese Triangles
Warm Lunches
8 triangles, serving 4 as a snack · Active 15 min · Total 25 min
These folded tortillas have a thin layer of beans and cheese inside. Spreading the filling to the fold keeps every bite interesting. The grown-up cooks one at a time so the young cook can watch the cheese melt from a safe spot.

Before you begin · grown-up check
The adult opens beans, heats and turns tortillas in the skillet and cuts the cooked rounds.
- A grown-up checks ingredient labels, the workspace and the young cook’s readiness before starting.
- Adult opens, rinses and drains beans. Place the cold skillet securely on the stove.
Ages are a starting guide. A grown-up checks your readiness and stays nearby. Follow the actor label on every step.

- TogetherWash hands with soap and water, clear the work area and read all the steps before measuring.
- Young cookMash beans and salsa together until most beans are broken.
- Young cookSpread the mixture over half of each tortilla, sprinkle on cheese and fold the bare half over.
- Grown-upHeat 1 tsp oil over medium-low heat. Cook two folded tortillas for 2–3 minutes per side until crisp and the filling is hot; repeat with remaining oil and tortillas.

The skill you’re learning
A thin, even filling warms faster than a mound. Pressing too hard squeezes it out, so fold the tortilla gently.
Try one change
Use drained canned pinto beans in the same amount instead of black beans.
Serving & storing
A grown-up puts leftovers in a covered shallow container at 40°F or colder within 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F. Use within 1 day. A grown-up reheats only the portion needed to 165°F.
