Cucumber Cream Cheese Sandwich Squares
Toast & Sandwich Lab
2 sandwiches, cut into 8 squares · Active 12 min · Total 12 min
Thin cucumber slices make a cool, crisp middle for a soft sandwich. The adult does the slicing and final cutting; the young cook spreads cream cheese and arranges an even layer so every square has some crunch.

Before you begin · grown-up check
The grown-up washes and thinly slices the cucumber, cuts the finished sandwiches and supervises spreading.
- Together wash hands with soap and water and clean the work surface.
- Adult checks ingredient labels, equipment and task suitability; ages are starting guides, not a guarantee of readiness.
- Adult handles the cucumber knife and finished-sandwich cutting.
Ages are a starting guide. A grown-up checks your readiness and stays nearby. Follow the actor label on every step.
Let’s make it
- Grown-upWash the cucumber, cut enough thin slices to make 1/2 cup, and pat them dry. Set any unused cucumber aside.
- Young cookStir the dill into the cream cheese in its measuring cup with the blunt spreading knife.
- Young cookSpread the dill cream cheese evenly over all four slices of bread.
- Young cookCover two bread slices with one even layer of cucumber. Add the other slices, cheese side down.
- Grown-upMove the sandwiches to the cutting board and cut each into four squares. Serve on the plate.
The skill you’re learning
Drying a watery filling helps keep sandwich bread firm. A single flat cucumber layer also makes the sandwich easier to hold than a tall slippery pile.
Try one change
Replace the dill with 1/8 tsp dried basil.
Serving & storing
Refrigerate covered at 40°F or below within 2 hours of preparation (1 hour above 90°F); use within 1 day. For a packed lunch, use an insulated lunch bag with two cold sources and keep chilled until eating; discard uneaten packed portions after lunch. Pack in a snug container so the squares stay together.
